NAPLES

The Inquisition and The anatomical machines of the Cappella San Severo ( also known as “Pietatella”)

The tour starts from piazza San Domenico in Naples. The first stop and visit will be at the Angevin church built as house for the Domenicans in the 1324. The building and the related nunnery became the heart of the Aragonese noblemen but also a relevant intellectual and philosophical centre. There took place San Tommaso D’Aquino’s lessons among whose pupils there was the illustrious Tommaso Campanella and Giordano Bruno. Nowadays the rooms of the nunnery are not part of the building anymore because they have been made part the Casanova high school.

The journey goes on at the discovery of the Torture Museum, the place where the largest part of the instruments used by the Neapolitan Inquistion are stored. It is worth to remember that Naples has been one of the few cities where the Inquistion has never planted its roots deeply.
In the end, you will visit the wonderful Cappella San Severo also known as “la Pietatella”. It is an old noble mausoleum, the starting temple from which the ethically correct man was going to reach and develop the human conscience.

Neapolis Caponapoli
The religious islands , the Pharmacy of the Incurables and the anatomical museum.

The trip is entirely dedicated to the discovery of the old Acropolis also called ‘Caponapoli’ of the Greek Neapolis. It was the hill where the temple of Demetra stood during the fifth century b.C. and the place has still bare pieces of the old Greek defensive walls. They can be observed from Caponapoli street and from the church of Saint Aniello situated near the ramp of Maria Longo street.
At the end of the above-mentioned ramp stands the Hospital of the Incurables. The building was the representation of Maria Lorenza Longo’s endless humanitarian act. She was also the founder of the order of 33 (ordine delle Trentatrè), the group of nuns who lived in complete seclusion. The tour will continue with the visit to the Pharmacy of the Incurables and the related spices store. These places are defined a masterpiece of art and science together. They represent the most important laboratories where medicines were prepared and the cradle of the scientific élite belonging to the Neapolitan Illuminism.
The Neapolitan medical tradition is also well represented and documented by the MUSA – Museum of Science and Arts, in which the precious and famous anatomical documentations is stored.
